The Danny Faure Foundation is attending the 2022 UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon, Portugal

The Chairman of the Foundation, Former President Danny Faure participated as a Lead Discussant in Interactive Dialogue 5 entitled ‘Promoting and strengthening sustainable ocean-based economies, in particular for small island developing States and least developed countries’ on Tuesday 28th June at the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon, Portugal.

In his intervention, Former President Faure stated that “ to promote and strengthen sustainable ocean-based economies, we need to focus energies and resources where we can make the great difference in three priority areas: strengthening our food security, restoring and building resilience for planetary health and creating and supporting equitable and sustainable lives and livelihoods”.

At the global level, Former President Faure remarked that a new financial architecture is emerging and stressed on the need for more financial institutions to step up and play a critical role in providing the capital and know-how to facilitate capital flows.

Focusing on the western Indian ocean region, Former President Faure highlighted the experiences and achievements of Seychelles, notably the blue bond through which countries can harness capital markets for financing the sustainable use of marine resources and ocean protection where Seychelles has 30% of its exclusive economic zone under protection, 10 years ahead of the global target.

Former President Faure also spoke of the ‘Western Indian Ocean-Resilience and Prosperity Initiative’ (WIO-RPI) – a first of its kind – where Governments of the western Indian ocean region are joining to take a regional approach to ocean governance, to the sustainable development of the blue economy and to building resilience. The WIO-RPI is an initiative that is being co-developed by the Seychelles Government, the Nairobi Convention, Nekton and the Danny Faure Foundation.

Interactive Dialogue 5 was co-chaired by the Minister of Climate and Environment of the Kingdom of Norway, H.E. Mr. Barth Eide, and the Minister of the Sea of the Republic of Cabo Verde, H.E. Mr. Abraão Vicente.

The dialogue included the participation of the following four panelists and 2 lead discussants, including Former President Faure:


  • Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General, World Trade Organization, Geneva;
  • Mari Pangestu, Managing Director of Development Policy and Partnerships, the World Bank Group, Washington, D.C.;
  • Usha-Rao Monari, Under-Secretary-General and Associate Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme, New York;
  • Sanda Ojiambo, Assistant Secretary-General, UN Global Compact, New York

  • Werner Hoyer, President, European Investment Bank, Luxembourg

Interactive Dialogue 5 was moderated by Mr. Kristian Teleki, Head of the Secretariat of the High-level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy; Director, Friends of Ocean Action.
